2009-10 school budget, bus purchase proposition pass

Voters in the Niskayuna Central School District approved the district's proposed 2009-10 budget on Tuesday, May 19. The final tally was 1,614 yes votes to 1,020 no votes. Results were announced shortly after polls at the high school closed at 9 p.m.
The nearly $74.5 million budget for next year is expected to increase the tax levy by an estimated 2.45 percent, the lowest increase in six years, for residents in Niskayuna.
“We are really appreciative of our taxpayers for their continued support of our schools, especially during these difficult economic times,” said Superintendent of Schools Kevin Baughman. “It shows how much our community values education.”
Voters also approved a bus purchase proposition. That vote total was 1,623 yes votes to 986 no votes.
In the Board of Education race, incumbents Barbara Mauro and Robert Winchester were re-elected to three-year terms, beginning July 1. Board candidate vote tallies were as follows:
  • Barbara Mauro — 1,670
  • Robert Winchester — 1,598
  • Richard Fisher — 973
