School district seeks parent volunteers for
Special Education committees
Dear Parents:
The Niskayuna Central School District Student
Support Services Office is seeking volunteers to
be parent members of the Committee on Special
Education (CSE) or the Committee on Preschool
Special Education (CPSE). State laws require
that we have parent representatives present at
full CSE and at CPSE meetings. If the parent
representative is not present for full CSE/CPSE
meetings, then we have to cancel those meetings.
Presently, we do not have enough parent
representatives.
The role of the parent member at CSE or CPSE
meetings is to provide support to the parents of
the children whom we discuss. The parent member,
as a parent of a child with a disability, often
has a special perspective that can help the CSE/CPSE
meeting to progress in a positive way.
CSE meetings are held during the school day
generally between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. We are
seeking parent volunteers who are available most
of that time or part of the time. Even if you
can only help us once a month, we would
appreciate your assistance. We provide training
for parent members regarding the State and
Federal regulations governing special education
and how parent members can help at meetings.
If you are interested in becoming a CSE/CPSE
parent member, please call our office at
382-2525, ext. 50739, 50738 or 50735 by November
7. We will explain the process and answer any
questions you have. If you choose to
participate, we will schedule an interview with
you. If you continue with the process, your name
will be submitted to the Board of Education.
We would really appreciate any help you can give
us on behalf of District children.
Sincerely,
Lynne Rutnik, Administrator
Student Support Services
